I am going to install Configuration Manager 2012 for a client that currently has SCCM 2007 SP2 R3, but they have no lab environment for testing. Currently their production SCCM 2007 infrastructure is all on virtual servers. They have a virtual primary site and a virtual SQL 2008 database server. The domain controllers are physical servers.
I want a quick way to set up a proof of concept lab for them to test migration to ConfigMgr 2012. I have a new Hyper V server,I am wondering if it would be possible to create a lab with a new DC and import all the .VHDs for the existing production SCCM 2007 servers? These are roughly the steps that I think I would need to take:
- Build new DC in lab environment, extend the AD schema and create the System Management container
- Import the SCCM server .vhd and the SQL server .vhd and assign IP addresses or keep same addresses as production
- Add the SCCM server and the SQL server to the new domain
- Give the SCCM server computer account rights to the SYSTEM MANAGEMENT container in AD
- Create all service accounts in AD- client push, network access
- Re-configure AD boundaries, discovery OUs, and service accounts in SCCM
I am wondering if anybody has tried to do this before and whether it will work? Am I overlooking anything? Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jan
