SQL on-box or off-box?

Hi,

We are finalizing our CM 2012 design and are planning to put SQL Server on-box for our CAS, however, Microsoft is recommending that we put SQL Server off-box.  We will have approximately 60,000 clients.  Based on real-world experience, what is the general consensus for SQL Server placement and what are some of the pros and cons for each?
